Understanding the Difference between Motor,
Generator and a Transformer
- Often, one is confused with the basic definitions of a Generator, transformer and motor. A generator is a device, converting mechanical power to magnetic flux, further in turn altering the magnetic flux to electric power.
- Whereas, a Motor converts electric power to magnetic flux, further altering the magnetic flux to mechanical power.
- Lastly, a Transformer converts the electric power into magnetic flux, further altering the magnetic flux into a new form of electric power.
Transformers are generally chosen in place of a motor
or generator owing to the sole reason of being easy to maintain and 100% power
efficient.
A brief Idea about Distribution Transformers
The Distribution Transformers are used for converting higher voltage to lower voltages as
per the clients’ needs. These types of transformers are of varied types that can
be either installed on poles, can be placed undergrounds (vaults) or can be
grade level on pads. A good Distribution Transformer reduces the loss of

isolation, existing between the output and input windings. These transformers
never have a direct path (electrical) to the power output side from the power
